7 Markers – Recap (August 24, 2025)

“Iron sharpens iron”. A familiar proverb for many. Within the context of growing in faith, how do we do this? What do we ask both ourselves and one another? As we conclude the 7 Markers series, we explore how these 7 markers can continue to propel us forward individually and as a church family.

Sharpening One Another: Living Out the Seven Markers of a Disciple

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to grow in your faith? Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” This verse isn’t just poetic—it’s a call to action. It invites us to reflect on how we influence and support one another in our spiritual journeys.

Understanding Proverbs: Wisdom, Not Just Commands

Proverbs are often misunderstood as strict commands. But they’re not always black and white. Take Proverbs 26:4–5, for example:

  • “Do not answer a fool according to his folly…”
  • “Answer a fool according to his folly…”

Which is it? The answer lies in wisdom and discernment. Proverbs offer timeless truths, but they require us to seek God’s guidance in knowing when and how to apply them.

The Seven Markers of a Disciple

Over the past few weeks, we’ve explored seven key markers that help us evaluate our walk with Christ. These aren’t just checkboxes—they’re invitations to deeper reflection and growth.

1. Trust Jesus Unconditionally

Do you trust Him when it’s hard? When it’s inconvenient? Trust is the foundation of our faith. Without it, everything else is just going through the motions.

2. Spend Time with Jesus

Beyond devotions and prayers, are you cultivating a relationship with Him? Are you noticing His presence in everyday moments?

3. Gather Regularly with Other Christians

Community matters. Whether it’s weekly worship, prayer groups, or Bible study, gathering helps us grow together in faith.

4. Serve Within the Church

God has gifted each of us uniquely. Are you using your gifts to build up the church family?

5. Serve Outside the Church

Faith isn’t confined to church walls. Whether it’s volunteering, mentoring, or simply being present in your community, you carry Christ’s presence wherever you go.

6. Give Generously

Generosity isn’t just about money. It’s about stewarding your time, resources, and energy in ways that reflect God’s abundance.

7. Invest in the Next Generation

Passing on faith is a sacred responsibility. Whether mentoring youth or encouraging someone newer in their walk, we’re called to invest in others.

Reflection and Response

These markers aren’t meant to judge—they’re meant to guide. Ask yourself:

  • Am I trusting Jesus unconditionally?
  • Am I spending time with Him?
  • Am I gathering with others in faith?
  • Am I serving—inside and outside the church?
  • Am I giving generously?
  • Am I investing in the next generation?

If your answer is “not yet” or “not enough,” that’s okay. The journey of faith is ongoing. The Spirit nudges us forward, even when we stumble.

Final Thoughts

Let’s commit to revisiting these questions regularly—not just alone, but in community. Because as Proverbs reminds us, iron sharpens iron. Together, we grow. Together, we become more like Christ.
