Opposing forces with hope

February is upon us. The month of hearts and roses, of Mardi Gras and Lent, of (at least this year) winter Olympics. All of these can be welcome distractions from the challenges that winter brings. I/David want February to be a month of hope and joy for us, but, let’s face it, sometimes it is a month just to endure until the hope of spring comes…next month?

Pastor Alvin will complete his series on AI and the implications that rapidly changing technology has on our lives, and challenges to our thinking. He has reminded us that we are, in fact, unique and being made in God’s image is foundationally significant.

His series has continued a theme that we began with Advent: we live in a world with opposing forces. At Advent we broadly described them darkness and light. And Alvin was a bit more specific: artificial and authentic.

I will be returning to our consideration of Paul’s letter to Colossians, beginning with Chapter 2, verse 8. It, is a similar theme of opposing forces, challenges us not to be taken captive by hollow and deceptive philosophies which are in opposition to Christ.

As we consider these challenges, we continue to work towards effectively “…sharing Christ with our Communities.”

Board Update – January 2026

Finance

  • At our AGM last November, we noted we had an operational deficit. While we began January with an operational deficit (approx. $3000), we received 2 designated donations of $10,100 towards a heat pump and $50,000 towards the mortgage as well as other donations that helped to cover some significant, unexpected expenses (e.g. electrical repairs).

Property

  • We continue to use a snow removal company during this winter season and have asked for 2 additional requests for improved service.
  • Property Condition Assessment: Before proceeding with any painting, heat pump / AC or flooring work, we will be enlisting the services of CDW to do a PCA.
  • Roof: An architectural company pointed out some concerns. Kevin will investigate our roof quote history, contact original contractor regarding counter flashing and trim issues, and follow up on warranty coverage.
  • Our AED is now available in the kitchen next to the first aid kit.
  • A wireless doorbell system has been installed by the front door. Receivers are placed in the admin office, staff office and kitchen.

Mandarin Ministry

  • Prayer meetings have been moved from online to in-person the first Sunday of each month 9:00 to 10:00 am.
  • A new Sunday school program had been added with one hour dedicated to it after worship.
  • December 19: The Mandarin Ministry held a Christmas celebration, including a dinner and party featuring a short play commemorating the birth of Jesus, original skits, dances and a gift exchange with 70 – 80 people in attendance.
