The kingdom of God is now and not yet. Jesus began by instructing us to pray for God’s kingdom and his will to be done on earth. He ended the prayer by declaring – as a fact – that the kingdom is already in place, the power and the glory are God’s now and forever. This was a scandalous thing to pray, in the context of the Kingdom of Rome, with Augustus claiming King of Kings status. And it continues to be a counter-cultural declaration today; God’s kingdom is and will be forever and ever.
